Duval County, Florida
In 2010, Duval County, Florida boasted a population of 864,263 according to the United States Census. Established in 1822, Duval County was named after William Pope Duval. Duval was the Governor of the Florida Territory for 12 years, serving from 1822 to 1834. A section of St. Johns County was used to create Duval in 1822. In the beginning, the county had massive land holdings extending from the Suwannee River at the westward edge to the Atlantic Ocean in the other direction. It ran north from the mouth of the Suwannee River to the St. John's River and Jacksonville. Duval County was later divided into small sections creating both Nassau and Alachua counties in 1824. In 1858, another section of the county was taken and Clay County was formed. In the 1840's a small section of St. John's County was transferred to Duval County.
